Handheld Laser Welding and Cleaning Operator

Two days on the GAMMA GM15WX5 and GWEIKE handheld welders: gun handling, joint preparation, wobble settings, wire feed, and switching the same machine over to cleaning.

What You Will Be Able to Do

• Set the machine for the material and thickness and produce a sound bead
• Hold and move the gun at the correct angle, distance and speed
• Prepare butt, lap, fillet and corner joints for laser welding
• Use wire feed for gap filling and switch between the five welding modes
• Change the head over and use the same machine for laser cleaning

Course Outline

• Day 1 Safety, the gun and the first beads6 hours
  • Class 4 handheld safety: goggles, screens, reflective surfaces and fume extraction
  • Machine layout: source, chiller, gun, wire feeder, gas
  • The five modes on the GM15WX5 and what each one is for
  • Angle, stand-off, travel speed and wobble width: the four things that decide the bead
  • Practice beads on 1, 2 and 3 mm stainless
• Day 2 Joints, wire and cleaning6 hours
  • Butt, lap, fillet and corner joints, with and without wire
  • Gap tolerance: what laser forgives and what it does not
  • Aluminium and galvanised steel: reflectivity, zinc fume and the settings that work
  • Distortion control on thin sheet: tacking, sequence and backing
  • Changing to the cleaning head: rust, paint, oxide and pre-weld preparation

Machines and Tools You Will Train On

GAMMA GM15WX5 1500 W with RelFar control and wire feeder, stainless, mild steel, aluminium and galvanised coupons, laser goggles and fume extraction.

Prerequisites

Some welding experience helps but is not required.
